La edición inglesa del libro, publicado en mayo de 2007 alcanzó en una semana el segundo puesto de los libros más vendidos de Amazon.com (detrás de Harry Potter y las reliquias de la muerte) y alcanzó el primer puesto en su tercera semana.
Hitchens sostiene en él que la religión es “violenta, irracional, intolerante, aliada del racismo y el tribalismo,
invierte en la ignorancia, es hostil hacia el librepensamiento, despectiva hacia las mujeres y coactiva hacia los
niños” .
Los principales argumentos de Hitchens consisten en una combinación de historias personales, anécdotas históricas documentadas y análisis crítico de textos religiosos. Su crítica se dirije principalmente en las religiones abrahámicas, aunque tamben trata otras como el hinduismo y el budismo.

Hitchens argues in it that religion is "violent, irrational, intolerant, allied to racism and tribalism, invested in ignorance, is hostile to free thought, derogatory toward women and coercive toward children."
Hitchens' main arguments consist of a combination of personal stories, documented historical anecdotes and critical analysis of religious texts. His criticism is directed mainly in the Abrahamic religions and others like hinduism and Buddhism.
